Position Summary
POSTING FOR UNMC EMPLOYEES ONLY

Provides technical and operational leadership for the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) with initiative and independent judgment. Plans and implements laboratory policies, procedures, and services of NPHL’s Biology and Chemistry sections, working with laboratory directors and technical supervisors to ensure efficient and effective departmental operations, appropriate staffing and training, quality control and compliance adherence. Manages the laboratory resources and staff for the NPHL Biology and Chemistry sections; oversees biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory activities as pertaining to the Laboratory Response Network; coordinates the laboratory CLIA/CAP accreditation program in consultation with the Deputy Director and Director; and develops, performs, and analyzes clinical specimen testing, and coordinates research projects initiated in the Biology section.

Medical Technology, Chemistry, Toxicology, Physical, Biological Science or related field

Required Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of various biology and chemical techniques and ability to train and direct laboratory technologists.
  • Individual will be required to work within a Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL-3) high containment laboratory environment.
  • Research methodology and techniques; ability to analyze, document and interpret scientific and statistical data.
  • Individual will be required to be on call.
  • Individual must be able to pass a Department of Justice (DOJ) risk assessment to have access to and work with federally regulated biological agents.
  • Required to pass an N-95 mask fit test pre-employment.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to interact and work well with others.
  • Ability to manage laboratory staff and operations.
Preferred Education: Master's degree

Preferred Experience:
  • More than 5 years’ experience in clinical testing in a laboratory setting of which two years include direct supervision of staff with a molecular biology or microbiology specialty, or more than five years of experience in identifying pathogenic microorganisms in a laboratory setting.
  • Advancing experience in clinical laboratory administration.
Preferred License: Yes

Certification by agencies such as the American Society of Microbiology (ASM) or the American Society for Clinical Pathologist (ASCP).

Preferred Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience in various biology and chemical techniques and ability to train and direct laboratory technicians.
  • Advanced use and understanding of medical terminology in order to receive information and to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Financial and resource management.
